What do we do?
Cairngorm Ranger Service carries out the management of Cairngorm Estate for the benefit of visitors, conservation of the Estate and the future use of the area.

A description of the work of the Ranger Service is given in our Report for 2004.

This includes

  • Monitoring the resource, seeing how it's standing up to the way it's being used.
  • Carrying out physical works, or specifying and supervising contracts, such as path repairs, drainage, litter clearance.
  • Working with visitors and advising them on their use of the area. We post a Mountain Weather Forecast for mountaineers and hillwalkers and an avalanche forecast in winter (SAIS forecast)
  • Helping educational groups or individual students find out more about the Cairngorms. See the section on environmental education.
  • Keeping in touch with all our colleagues in CairnGorm Mountain Limited, Ranger Services in the Cairngorms and throughout Scotland, people developing the techniques we are carrying out and the legislation and advice we are disseminating, and all the people who get in touch with Cairngorm Ranger Service because of their high expectations of the new National Park.

    All things to all people?

Not quite. We are not the Cairngorms National Park Ranger Service, and are authorised only to work on Cairngorm Estate. We are not policemen, nor babysitters, neither gamekeepers nor groundsmen. See our report for more details.

    • Cairngorm Estate is owned and managed by Highlands & Islands Enterprise and extends to 1418ha, of which 598ha are leased to CairnGorm Mountain Ltd to operate as a ski area.
    • Under the most recent designations from the European Union, large tracts of the Estate have been designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive in recognition of the many important arctic species of bird which breed in the Cairngorm massif. It has also become a Special Conservation Area (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive because of the arctic-alpine plant communities and the associated habitats which are found here. These areas are referred to as Natura 2000 Sites.
    • Please refer to the protected areas page for more details of the various areas on the Estate and nearby.
    • The overriding aim of the management of Cairngorm Estate is to maintain and increase its capacity to be used for present and future uses subject to there being no significant detriment to the qualities recognised by the EU designations. These include nature conservation, education, recreation and economic activity.
    • One of the main constraints concerning the capacity of the Estate to sustain present use is the need to maintain the environmental integrity.
