Half a million pounds of high quality gleaming machinery is heading for CairnGorm Mountain next Saturday (21st May) as part of a fun weekend being held in Scotland by a group of car enthusiasts. Members of the Lotus Super Sevens group, who come from all over Europe, will be arriving at CairnGorm in their classic two-seater sports cars to take a trip on the Funicular for lunch in The Ptarmigan as part of their “Haggis Hunt” weekend in Scotland. Between 40 and 50 of the little sports cars, including one each from Finland and Holland, will be in the Coire Cas car park, next to the Base Station, from around 12.30 onwards and they are sure to be a huge magnet for Highland car enthusiasts as well as anyone visiting Badenoch and Strathspey this weekend.
And during their two hours’ lunchtime stop at CairnGorm Mountain, the proud owners of these lively and colourful little vehicles, many if which first hit the road in the late Fifties and Sixties, have extended an invitation to other visitors to have a closer look, including an opportunity to sit in the driving seat and be photographed in one of the classic products of famed Lotus car designer Colin Chapman. Described by one owner as “a street legal racing car”, the Lotus Super Seven is very light AND very fast, and is capable of accelerating from zero to 60 m.p.h in an astonishing SIX SECONDS!
The group will be travelling to CairnGorm from Pitlochry but anyone expecting to see a lengthy convoy of these little sports cars on the A9 next Saturday morning will be disappointed. As rally organiser, Jonathon Rarity from Helensburgh, explained: “The only place where people will be able to see the entire rally with all of the Lotus Super Sevens together will be at CairnGorm during lunchtime between 12.30 and 2.30 p.m.. In the interest of both safety and ease of traffic on the already busy A9 at weekends, we have devised several different routes for people to travel to CairnGorm, including one that will see a few cars arriving in Strathspey via The Lecht Road. Driving around the countryside is all part of the fun of the weekend but we have to be aware of the needs of other road users too.”
Said Tania Alliod of CairnGorm Mountain: “The Lotus Super Sevens club members undertake two major rallies each year, one within the UK and the other into different parts of Europe, but this will be the first time that they will have visited CairnGorm. Combining their visit with our own Ride the Train for £1 promotion and the special offer of a reduced Friends of CairnGorm membership means that next Saturday will be very busy. Getting such a prestigious group to visit us clearly demonstrates that we are a major visitor attraction within the National Park. The Lotus Super Sevens are not the only collector’s cars to be heading our way as we are shortly welcoming a major group of Bentley owners”.
