With the Gala Presentation evening at The Ptarmigan only ten days away, excitement is heightening for this year’s CairnGorm Mountain Badenoch & Strathspey Community Coaching Award, particularly after the local Sports Council announced its shortlist last weekend. From the seven nominations received, four coaches - representing three different local sporting organisations - have been short listed and all will be invited to attend the Sporting Chance evening, along with their partners, as guests of CairnGorm Mountain Ltd. on Saturday, 14th May when the winner will be announced.
The finalists for this year’s Community Coach of the Year award are: Pat Goddard from Laggan Fitness Club; Ken Deans, coach of Strathspey Rugby Club; and Ken MacIntosh and John Russell, both coaches of Newtonmore Primary Shinty team.
Said Caroline Sterrit, Sports Development Co-ordinator for Badenoch & Strathspey, who has been responsible for co-ordinating all of the nominations: “I know that it’s a cliché but all of the coaches nominated, either by their clubs or by individuals, are winners because they have made their own special mark on those with whom they have been working. Volunteers at all levels are the unsung heroes who keep most sports alive and coaching is not only about teaching skills but also communicating enthusiasm for a sport, something that can motivate youngsters more than anything else. That is why this is such a significant event for the local sports community and why we are delighted that, once again, CairnGorm Mountain has actively sponsored and promoted it.”
A delighted Fiona Milligan, from CairnGorm Mountain, was happy to confirm that this year’s Sporting Chance event was “yet another sold out evening at The Ptarmigan” with all profits from the event going to SLRT (The Strathspey Leisure and Recreation Trust).
