A recent survey inviting people to name any Shakespearean play came out with the perhaps surprising result that “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” topped the poll - ahead of “Hamlet”, “As You Like It” and even “the Scotch Play”, as “Macbeth” is referred to by superstitious theatricals. For many, the light hearted play involving fairies, elves, young lovers and, in particular, the comic antics of simple Athenian workmen in acting out a Greek tragedy, was their introduction to Shakespeare’s work and that experience made it particularly memorable for them.
Next weekend, another Midsummer Night’s Dream is offering further memorable experiences but this time, to diners across Badenoch and Strathspey when The Ptarmigan Restaurant, at the top end of the CairnGorm Funicular starts its Sunset Dining season on Midsummer Night – Saturday, 21st June. Last year’s visitors to The Ptarmigan, the UK’s highest restaurant, were enchanted by some of the most spectacular and unique views available anywhere in Scotland, and this visual experience was greatly enhanced when the setting sun created its own special backdrop for Strathspey and the Monadhliaths.
Starting off the Sunset Dining season at the award winning restaurant, there is a special Midsummer Gala Dinner on offer on the opening night at a fixed price of £35 per head for a high quality dinner in a setting that, at 3,600 feet above sea level, is spectacularly different. And, exclusively for Midsummer’s Night, canapes and champagne will be served on the viewing terrace before guests sit down for an evening that promises to be something quite special.
Said Heather Galbraith, CairnGorm Mountain’s Sales & Events Co-ordinator: “Returning in the late evening by the funicular railway, and journeying down the mountain thorough the summer twilight, all add to this very memorable occasion, particularly when the stars are clearly visible through the glass roofs of the carriages. We may not be able to offer Shakespeare’s fairyland, or even an Athenian forest, but our “Midsummer Night’s Dream” at The Ptarmigan will have a special magic of its own and be remembered for a long time.”
“As Shakespeare put it: ‘Love looks not with the eyes - but with the mind…’ The view from the Ptarmigan is not simply eye-catching – it’s also mind-blowing and all our visitors love it.
The Sunset Dining season at the Ptarmigan starts on Saturday 21st June and continues on Friday and Saturday evenings until the end of September, and on Sunday evenings until the end of August, at £27.95 per head, including the funicular railway. As the evening involves a journey on the funicular, reservations are required and can be made by telephoning 01479 861336.
