CairnGorm Mountain welcomed two VIP political visitors last Sunday (13th) when the First Minister of the Scottish Executive, Jack McConnell and Anne McGuire, Deputy Secretary of State for Scotland, dropped in while on a whistlestop tour of the Highlands. The First Minister was at the Ranger Base three weeks ago to announce additional Scottish Executive support for mountain safety via the provision of an improved radio service for mountain rescue but did not have time to see the Highland's most success visitor attraction of recent years. But it was different this time as Mr McConnell and his party travelled to the Ptarmigan on the CairnGorm Funicular, accompanied by Hamish Swan, CairnGorm Mountain's Chairman, and Bob Kinnaird, the operating company's Chief Executive, prior to visiting the Mountain Exhibition, The Shop at the Top and The Ptarmigan Restaurant. During his visit, the First Minister met several groups of visitors, including skiers and non-skiers, as well as company staff. Afterwards, Mr McConnell commented: "CairnGorm Mountain, along with its facilities and staff, are a first class example of the way ahead for Scottish tourism. The new year-round visitor attraction offers the quality experience that today's visitors are now demanding and we must be working to offer this standard of consistently across the whole of Scotland." Bob Kinnaird, CairnGorm Mountain's Chief Executive, said: "It is always important that CairnGorm Mountain and its facilities are known to as wide an audience as possible and having the First Minister asking if he, along with the Deputy Secretary of State for Scotland, could drop in when in the area demonstrates that people across the board are very much aware of what we offer here to all our visitors. The First Minister and his party were with us for over an hour and were clearly impressed by what they saw and experienced." "Hopefully, we will be given the opportunity to welcome several other groups of such VIP visitors in the not too distant future." ends Further information from: TANIA ADAMS Tel: 01479 861304 or BILL NOLAN Tel: 07885 071804
