To underline its commitment to providing quality catering as part of its appeal as an all-year-round tourist attraction, CairnGorm Mountain has appointed Ian Whitaker (31) to the key position of Catering Manager, responsible for all catering operations at the new CairnGorm Mountain Experience when it opens fully next Spring. Mr Whitaker joins CairnGorm from Edinburgh's Our Dynamic Earth where he has been Food and Beverage Manager since March, 1999. Prior to that, he was Deputy General Manager at the main restaurant at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
Mr Whitaker brings a wealth of experience in developing quality catering for a wide range of age groups and tastes at one of Scotland's leading visitor attractions where it is not unusual for its two restaurants to be catering for in excess of 2,500 visitors daily. In addition, as part of the sales and marketing team at Our Dynamic Earth, he was responsible for developing its corporate functions and events business, ranging from major corporate dinners to cocktail receptions.
Having started at Our Dynamic Earth some three months before it opened in July, 1999, Ian Whitaker was responsible for setting up the visitor attraction's catering operation, something that will stand him in good stead over the next few months when he has to do it all again - but at a somewhat greater height above sea level this time.
In announcing the appointment, Mr Hamish Swan, Chairman of CairnGorm Mountain Ltd. said: "The aspirations of people visiting tourist attractions are always increasing and they rightly seek quality across the board. From The Ptarmigan Panoramic Restaurant, located at the top end of the Funicular, some 122 metres below the summit, down to the restaurant within the Day Lodge, close to the Base station at Coire Cas car park, our catering operation will have to reflect the overall high quality that we are offering to visitors to CairnGorm. We also want to develop fully the corporate business sector, one of the fastest growing areas in tourism development, by promoting special events and functions in what will be a quite unique and very spectacular setting "
